Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was one of the most influential Danish designers of the 20th century. He became internationally renowned for his revolutionary lighting designs, which continue to stand as timeless icons today. Less widely known — yet equally extraordinary — was his visionary approach to furniture and instrument design.

His work was guided by a clear philosophy:

i.   Function and aesthetics are inseparable
ii.  Light, space, and object exist in dialogue
iii. Design serves people — never the other way around

Today’s PH Pianos are based on original concepts from the 1930s, carrying this philosophy forward with uncompromising dedication to form, function, and craftsmanship.

VIA x TONEART

The collaboration between VIA – Piano & Arts Center and ToneArt goes far beyond a conventional partnership. It is grounded in a shared mindset and a unified vision — with the ambition to rethink the market entirely: moving away from the standardized traditional instrument toward a design object that unites history, design, and sound within a single form.

This vision is also reflected in our concrete collaboration, where we jointly position instruments as unique works of art.

Upcycling

From traditional instrument to individual design object.

A new perspective on the piano industry: existing instruments are given new relevance through craftsmanship, restoration, and the PH design language.

The world of pianos has long been defined by a familiar image — classic, polished black, restrained, and often without a distinct identity.
Here, what is valuable is preserved, what can be saved is thoughtfully reused, and the traditional piano is reimagined through the PH design language.

An existing instrument is transformed into one with renewed meaning — through restoration, preservation, and artistic transformation.

A new identity, less waste, more meaning.
A second life. A preserved legacy.

A New Perspective on the Instrument

This approach represents a shift in perspective:

From standardization to identity

From replacement to renewal

from anonymous object to design piece

A familiar instrument is reinterpreted through reuse and design. Its craftsmanship and musical substance are preserved, while gaining a stronger architectural, sculptural, and emotional presence.

The focus is on continuing existing value rather than replacing it. A piano is seen not only as an instrument, but as an object to live with — to care for and preserve.

Why this Matters

The future of high-quality design lies not only in the new, but also in the conscious handling of what already exists. By transforming selected pianos, materials, craftsmanship, and musical substance are preserved. At the same time, objects emerge with a clear identity, their own history, and lasting value.

For PH Pianos, this is where sustainability, aesthetics, and tradition come together — not as a compromise, but as a deliberate act of design.

The Process

Step 1 – Selecting the right foundation

Instruments with the right potential for restoration and transformation are identified by ToneArt / PH Pianos, based on structure, quality, and long-term perspective.

Step 2 – Understanding what remains

Each instrument is carefully analysed by ToneArt / PH Pianos: what can be preserved, what needs to be refined or redesigned?

Step 3 – Careful restoration

Core musical and structural components are restored with the highest precision, in alignment with the instrument’s function, substance, and future.

Step 4 – Reimagined in PH design language

Form, surface, materials, and expression are redesigned to give the instrument a clear identity and strong presence.

Step 5 – Craftsmanship in every detail

All surfaces and details are meticulously refined to create a cohesive whole as both instrument and design object.

Step 6 – A new chapter

The finished piano begins a new life — not as a replaced object, but as an existing instrument with renewed value, relevance, and deeper meaning.

Upcyling as a Service

A piano is often more than an instrument — it is memory, history, and a personal heirloom. Perhaps you have an instrument at home that is connected to special moments and deserves a new life.

Through our upcycling service, we transform existing pianos into design objects with a renewed presence and sense of value. In close alignment with the family of Poul Henningsen and in accordance with his design language, your instrument is reinterpreted without losing its identity. The soul and character of the instrument are preserved, while its exterior gains a completely new expressive quality.

On request, tonal and technical upgrades can also be carried out, bringing the instrument to a new level both visually and musically. This way, a familiar piano becomes a unique object that transforms your space — while continuing its story.
